In a significant leap towards sustainable energy solutions, Trina Solar has collaborated with New Zealand’s leading solar generation company, Lodestone Energy, to successfully complete the largest solar farm in New Zealand to date — Kohirā solar farm. This monumental utility-scale solar project also marks a significant milestone for Trina Solar as it’s the first integrated module and TrinaTracker project in the Oceanic region – further establishing our position as a total solutions provider. It sets a new standard for solar energy integration and innovation.

Unveiling New Horizons in Renewable Energy

Spanning an impressive 64 hectares, equivalent to 120 football fields, the solar farm features over 61,000 Trina Solar Vertex 550W modules mounted on TrinaTracker systems, generating 33MW of DC energy. What sets this project apart is its integration of Trina Solar's ultra-high-power bifacial dual glass modules with Vanguard 2P trackers, powered by a smart algorithm that dynamically optimizes the tracking angle of the sun. This innovative technology ensures maximum energy generation, even in challenging environmental conditions.

Agrivoltaics: Where Solar Energy Meets Agriculture

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Kohirā solar farm is its implementation of agrivoltaic farming. The ample space between the panel rows and a 2-meter tracker height enabled the coexistence of solar energy generation and agricultural activities, including grazing sheep or growing crops, beneath the solar panels. By maximizing land use efficiency, this dual-purpose system not only generates renewable energy but also supports local agricultural initiatives, a crucial factor in regions like New Zealand with its increasingly limited land resources.

Beyond supplying solar panels and trackers, Trina Solar has actively supported local installers, such as Infratec and Drillco. By sharing its 27 years of experience and providing training in assembly and installation techniques to reduce the learning curve, Trina Solar has enabled lower installation pricing and minimized contingency costs. In addition, by having Trina Solar as a single procurement source for both solar panels and solar trackers helped to streamline processes, allowing for faster delivery, smoother negotiations, and unified after-sales service. This approach not only reduces costs but also ensures efficiency, especially in challenging site conditions. This collaborative approach has resulted in optimized solutions, innovative designs, and a tangible outcome of our close partnership with Lodestone Energy.

Looking Towards a Zero-Carbon Future

As Trina Solar looks ahead, the company remains committed to empowering New Zealand's zero-carbon future. By providing technological excellence across modules, trackers, and energy storage systems, Trina Solar aims to drive further innovation and sustainability in the renewable energy sector. The success of the Kohirā solar farm serves as a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and a shared vision for a brighter, more sustainable future for New Zealand and beyond. With continued innovation, collaboration, and dedication, the possibilities for renewable energy are limitless. Together, we can power a brighter, greener world for generations to come.
