In the end of July, Power & Renewables APAC Conference 2022 is held online. Sponsored by Wood Mackenzie, Australian Institute of Energy and Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), this conference brings together leading solar developers, along with key regulatory bodies from core APAC markets to shed light on plans towards energy transition and net-zero future in the light of global climate change. The focus will be in-depth conversations between Wood Mackenzie’s leading regional analysts and the key industry players across Asia.

Todd Li, President of Asia Pacific from Trina Solar, attends the conference and shares Trina Solar’s wisdom and actions to pursue low carbon. Here are some questions from the conversation:

Q1 As a new energy company, what role does Trina Solar play under the global energy transition and carbon neutrality goals?

Todd Li: Trina Solar is an advocate as well as a practitioner of low carbon. It has put in place a 1+3+N multi-tiered business ecosystem that provides vertical solutions including products, systems and smart energy to help achieve carbon neutrality and clean energy worldwide.

Relying on technological innovation, Trina Solar actively promotes the establishment of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system. So far, we have set or broken 24 world records in terms of photovoltaic (PV) cell conversion efficiency and module output power.

In May, with the advantage of 210mm wafers, its Vertex modules were awarded the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) certificate, and were found to achieve the lowest carbon emissions (at least 30% lower than the industry average in China).

Trina Solar also diversify and deepen the ways to low carbonization. It has joined the global Science-Based Targets initiative to help limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C and worked with WWF China to initiate the “Clean Energy for Earth” campaign.

Q2 What innovative photovoltaic technologies will lead the global PV growth momentum in the next 3-5 years?

Todd Li: Solar energy is a powerful force in achieving carbon neutrality. Gao Jifan, Chairman of Trina Solar, stated PV power generation, energy storage, ultra-high voltage power and energy digitization are the four pillars in achieving carbon neutrality, which should be supported and realized by upgrading technology.

210 plus N-type is becoming the first choice for further improving conversion efficiency, reducing system cost and strengthening a company’s competitiveness. In adopting 210mm cells and N-type technology, the module power will achieve 700W+, and such technical advances point the way to the future in technology and products for the PV industry.

Q3 What is Trina Solar doing in solar module recycling?

Disposal of scrapped PV modules at the end of product life cycle is an important issue. As a responsible company, Trina Solar strictly abides by the e-waste management laws and regulations of the countries in which we operate to ensure that electrical and electronic equipment, including PV modules, is properly managed by means of recycling, reusing, reclamation and regeneration.

A key benefit of solar modules, made from silicon, silver, copper and aluminum, is that they can be recycled, which saves resources and reduces energy consumption. We firmly believe recycling scrapped PV modules has significant economic and environmental value.

Q4 Australia faces many obstacles on the way to energy transition. How can Trina Solar help Australia with that?

Todd Li: Energy transition may take some time, but there is an excellent opportunity for Australia. Trina Solar always positively promotes the growth of clean energy in APAC and globally.

According to data from Sunwiz, an independent market research company that specializes in data and analysis of the Australian solar market, Trina Solar is the top selling brand of solar panel in Australia.

The carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals can be the most important driving force for the development of the new energy industry. In the future, Trina Solar will make more contributions to carbon neutrality and a carbon-free new energy world through innovation, and provide more power for global sustainable development.
